There's nowhere else like it in Britain. Once you reach Newcastle you know you've arrived. By road or rail - all at once everything drops from view except the Tyne Bridge. An impressive sight, the bridge is the symbol of Newcastle the world over. Below flows the mighty River Tyne, famed in folk song and legend it even has its own Roman God. Far below you lies Quayside, an area that is the symbolic and historic heart of this elegant city. Over the bridge and it's straight to the heart of the city. It's this compact area with its spacious feel which gives Newcastle a tremendous sense of liveliness throughout the day and into the night. Newcastle is a city of activity, there's plenty to do but time and space in which to relax and unwind, to enjoy yourself. There is a rich variety of entertainment, there is a deep sense of history, something of interest at every turn of the head. And just outside the city is the Northumbrian countryside, with world famous attractions such as Hadrian's Wall and Durham Cathedral and Castle. The best way to explore Newcastle's fascinating history is on foot and the city has a number of excellent City Trails which are easy to follow with guide books. Newcastle's Heritage Trails are a great way to explore the city in easy stages. Four trails cover various aspects of the city's history, The Wall, Station, Classical and Churches trails each follow a central theme and take between one to one and a half hours to walk.
